The hold will usually be released by your bank in a couple of days. As to how long to wait, I'd give it perhaps to the end of the day, and if the application still doesn't appear when you Check for Available Downloads command under the Store menutry purchasing it again.
Even if you were charged the first time and the charge just hasn't appeared on your credit card yet, the application should still download without you being charged a second time.
